Spanish-first preschool · Canutillo, Texas

The day starts in Spanish, with the family at the door

Yucca is a preschool for children ages 2, 3 and 4. The teachers speak Spanish with the children through the day, and Spanish or English with families, whichever they prefer. Hellos happen at the door: grandmothers, mothers and fathers arrive, and the day starts with a hug.

Families at the school gate in the morning: a grandmother hugs a girl while a boy holds up his drawing

A day

A day in Spanish

What the children hear, sing and read between arrival and pickup.

  • A mother and father arrive with their daughter at the classroom door, where a teacher greets them

    Arrival and hello

At the door the greeting is in Spanish: good morning, a hug and the plan for the morning. Families who prefer English are answered in English.

    The whole day
  • A group of children sit on a rug listening to a story a teacher reads aloud

    Story and songs

On the rug, the teacher reads aloud, sings and lets the children point at the pictures and repeat the words. The books are in Spanish, and some are in English.

  • Children eating at a table while two adults serve the food

    Mealtime at the table

Meals are at small tables, with adults sitting alongside. The talk is about what is on the plate: the colors, the tastes and who pours the water.

Safety routines

  • Arrival and pickup

Each child is handed over and picked up at the door, with a teacher. A child leaves only with the people the family listed in writing, and we ask for ID from anyone we do not know.

  • Counting children

We count the children on arrival, going out to the yard, coming back and at pickup. One person counts and another confirms.

  • Sun and water

The yard has shade, and each child drinks water before going out, midmorning and when coming back in. In strong heat, play moves indoors.

  • Meals

The week's menu is posted for families. If your child has an allergy, tell us at the tour; we ask privately once you enroll.

  • First aid

Each group has staff trained in CPR and first aid, and a kit within the teachers' reach.

  • Who comes into the classroom

Visitors come in with a teacher or the director and sign in on arrival. Tours are by appointment.
